Liu Residence
Tolono, Illinois
Located on a rural farmstead that is currently developing into a family compound, this house replaces the original farmhouse on much the same site. The farmhouse vernacular of the new structure relates to the surroundings, overlooking a seldom traveled country road, fields and a small river.
Designed to emulate many aspects of the original, this house recreates many experiences remembered by the client. The somewhat open plan and the abundant fenestration capture views of the countryside in all directions, and a strong relationship between interior and exterior spaces is facilitated by a series of porches and outdoor spaces. Several elements of the original house were incorporated into the design, including a number of ornamental doors and the stone foundation, which was reclaimed for use in the landscape design.
This house, while vernacular in essence, is whimsical in many respects and reflects the interesting lifestyle of its owners.
